No more toe-curling pain, mamas!

With Kelly’s knowledge of Face To Breast Symmetry—a key principle of the Thompson Method, founded by Dr Robyn Thompson—and practical tips, you can discover how to enjoy a pain-free breastfeeding journey that will bring joy and comfort to both you and your baby.

So, whether you are an expectant mother preparing for the arrival of your little one or a new mum struggling with nipple pain, this article will equip you with essential strategies to make your breastfeeding experience as smooth and enjoyable as possible.

Let’s dive into Kelly’s five invaluable tips for pain-free nips and unlock the secrets to successful breastfeeding.

  1. Avoid common forceful techniques such as cross cradle, nipple to nose, hamburger approach. Dr Robyn Thompson’s research supports a more gentle cradle approach. Dr Robyn’s life’s work and PhD research is based on why so many women were experiencing painful nipple trauma on early discharge from hospital.  The key principles of the Thompson Method demonstrate that a baby doesn’t need an open wide mouth or lots of areola. This allows the baby to vacuum the nipple without use of forceful techniques or nipple-to-nose manipulation.
  2. Learn about the 3 Golden Hours and how factors such as the decisions made in labour, birth preferences and the first breastfeed impact your breastfeeding journey.
  3. Understand how your body works to produce breast milk. This common concern can sometimes be the beginning of unnecessary breast milk extraction and early introduction of bottles and teats. Education = informed decision
  4. Be with your baby. Breastfeeding frequently and enjoying skin-to-skin in those first 72-96 hours is crucial in establishing breastfeeding.
  5. Preparation during pregnancy! Don’t leave it to chance.
