Lunar New Year celebrations are in full swing, so we polled our 4,300+ members on their favourite dumplings in Sydney.
Here are the results!
Din Tai Fung– Winner!
It seems our RDMs can’t get enough of the slurpy soupy goodness of the xiao long bao (soup dumplings) dished up at Din Tai Fung. Their signature point of difference – every pork dumpling pastry is delicately hand made to measure between precisely 4.8 and 5.2 grams, before being filled to weigh between 20.8 and 21.2 grams and steamed for exactly 3 minutes. With 10 locations across Sydney (Chatswood being our closest), you can be sure these hot tasty morsels are always close to hand.
Taste of Shanghai, Eastwood
Our closest location of the Taste of Shanghai franchise, they have a large menu offering a variety of steamed and pan fried dumplings, including xiao long bao. The restaurant is extremely busy and service a bit lax at times but this is a reliable choice for a mid-week dinner.
New Shanghai, Chatswood
New Shanghai has 5 locations across Sydney. Their menu is similar to Taste of Shanghai, however their slick fit outs across 5 locations means that New Shanghai is a great place to meet friends for dinner or have a meal before a movie.
Lok Lok Dumpling Bar, Rhodes and Macquarie Centre
Lok Lok is our backup plan when Rhodes Phoenix is just too busy. Their food court locations at Rhodes Waterside and Macquarie Centre means that any time can be dumpling time! They even deliver to some suburbs from their Rhodes store! Pass the phone…
Shanghai Dumpling, Chatswood
If you haven’t tried Shanghai Dumpling at Chatswood, you’re missing out! They claim to be Australia’s first ever Shanghai dumpling specialty store.. and I believe them!
Every dumpling is hand made fresh on site the same day. They have a large variety of combinations not found in many other dumpling bars. You can also buy the raw dumplings to go, fresh or frozen, for a quick and simple dinner.
Chefs Gallery, Macquarie Centre
All the food at Chef’s Gallery is delicious, but we especially think their adorable dessert buns are the winner here! The latest instalment – Emoji buns filled with hot custard… drool. Our closest location is Macquarie Centre- perfect for a pre-movie bite!
257 Home Kitchen, Eastwood
Admin Bec rates 257 Home Kitchen’s pan fried pork buns as the best in Sydney- and she’s eaten A LOT of them! They’re crunchy on the bottom, pillowy soft on top, with just the right amount of pork filling. 257 is absolutely heaving of an evening so be sure to book!
Lan Yuan, Top Ryde
Lan Yuan offers daily yum cha from 11am – 3pm and serves fresh, made to order dumplings. You won’t find any carts or stamp cards at this modern Cantonese restaurant, simply fill in your order form and the goodness will be delivered to your table!
If you have a suggestion for a place that’s missing email us.
Until we eat again,
Bec xo
