We took two 11-year-olds and one big kid (Dad) to check out Freak VR at Macquarie Centre. It was a big thumbs up from our crew!
Located on level 4 at Macquarie Centre near Timezone and Rebel Sport, this virtual reality centre is sure to please everyone with over 70 games, loads of themes to select from such as fun or active, shooter to adventure, driving, dancing and more. There was even a workplace / office simulation that we were surprised to see our kids loving, while Dad spent his time battling virtual Zombies.
The centre is split into 2 main areas – the individual VR experience where you play solo for 30 or 60 minutes, and then the group VR section where you can play Free Roam, Escape Room or Laser Tag with up to 4 people. We tried out the Ghostbusters-style game which resulted in lots of screaming and laughing!
Down the side of the centre you’ll find Freak Drive if you’re into race car driving, and at the front you’ll find a seating area to chill and it’s also where they host the parties.
In terms of ages, Freak VR is designed to be out-of-this-world fun for kids aged 6 right up to adults. However, all games have age recommendations so your kids can’t play something above their age unless you are there and approve it with the staff.
Freak VR is open 7 days a week mid-morning till late (check times on the website) and they’re open even longer hours during the school holidays. They also offer birthday party packages – read more about that below.
Types of VR available
Virtual Free Roam – For the brave, adventurous or outright crazy! Up to four players walk around an open arena with absolute freedom of movement while exploring a parallel universe, solving challenges or fighting for survival. Suitable for ages 6+. This is where we played ghost patrol which was like being ghost busters in a haunted house but suitable for kids. With your headsets, you can talk to each other so you can work as a team and have lots of fun together. Learn more here.
Virtual Escape Rooms – Their virtual escape rooms will transport you to other worlds! Play in teams of 2-4 or 6 and complete mind-bending puzzles and death-defying challenges on your mission to escape and survive. Suitable for ages 12+. Learn more here.
