RDM Visits: Midson Rd Child Care Centre, Epping

posted in: Childcare, Life | 0

We visited Midson Road Child Care Centre, a well-established and highly sought-after childcare in Epping and we’re keen to share with you our findings. There’s a lot to love about this beautiful centre – they’re not your average childcare!

Owner Ngaire Hutchison is the 3rd generation in her family to work in childcare and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience. She leads a super energetic and passionate team, perfectly exemplified by our tour guide, the lovely Director Mel Ellis who was proud to be showing us around the centre. Here’s some of what we discovered.

Industry Leaders

Purpose-built 25 years ago, the exemplary service that Midson Road Child Care Centre has been providing during that time has not gone unnoticed. The wall and table of awards which can’t be missed upon entering the centre, is a testament to the service they’ve been providing the community and is the tip of the iceberg when it comes to how they operate. In 2023 Midson Road Child Care Centre were winners of the most ‘Outstanding Early Childhood Centre’ in the Northern District Local Business Awards.

We learned that they are leaders in their field in a number of ways, from providing input to the National Quality Framework for Childcare to working with the Department of Education on a variety of pilot programs. A reliable point of contact and information source for universities and professional organisations, Midson Road Child Care has established itself as early adopters and ahead of the standards in all areas, striving for professionalism not only in-centre and in the community but also in the broader industry.

They’re also leaders for inclusivity, participating in the STaR program which enables children with disabilities and additional needs to be included in mainstream childcare centres. Children come from as far as Baulkham Hills to access this wonderful service.

Long-standing, Highly Skilled Staff

The centre is very proud of its staff longevity and qualifications. We were impressed to learn that Director Mel has been with the centre for 29 years! They are also proud to share that they have 5 university-educated Early Childhood Teachers at the centre, exceeding regulatory requirements by 3, and each room maintains above-requirement staff ratios.

Staff are highly valued and heavily invested in, with no external casuals and lots of additional training /support. This all works towards providing continuity of care for the children and offering the best education possible.

Home Away From Home

In terms of the look and feel of the centre, there’s no doubt that it is truly a home away from home. It’s bigger than it looks at first glance, with plenty of outdoor and indoor spaces for children to enjoy.

Mature trees and shade sails provide plenty of sun cover across the expansive outdoor area which features endless areas for discovery and fun including an obstacle course, a separate and secure play area for babies, veggie garden, native stingless beehive, cubby house and more.

Inside, rooms are clean, organised and carefully curated to provide fun ways to learn at every turn.

As for food, the centre offers 4 meals per day, all of which are prepared by an in-house chef. Meals are fresh and seasonal, and the menu is almost never repeated throughout the year!

Preschool Program

Midson Road Child Care provides a comprehensive school preparation program designed to ensure a smooth transition to a formal school environment. Their university-trained Early Childhood Teachers develop in-depth programs focused on pre-literacy, pre-mathematics, pre-science, and hands-on learning. These programs are designed to give children a solid foundation and understanding of the world around them, which is crucial for their early learning success.

Through engaging, open-ended, and practical experiences, children actively participate with various learning tools to explore and develop their thought processes, skills, and ideas. The centres interest-based learning approach in a fun and stimulating environment keeps children engaged and excited about learning, in turn creating a lifelong enthusiasm and openness to future educational experiences.
