Safe Storage Solutions for Homes with Little Ones

As a parent, you’ll be well aware that curious toddlers love to explore every corner of your home. That is why you must take every step to implement measures that will keep them safe at all times.

One of the best ways to do this is to embrace safe storage solutions that reduce the risk of injury, illness or other potential hazards.

Here are some innovative ways you can do that to ensure your home is both organised and protected for your little adventurers.

Install Chemical Storage Cabinets

In any home, there is usually a mix of hazardous and dangerous materials to be found. These include flammable liquids and solids, pesticides, corrosive substances, organic peroxides, oxidising agents and other toxic substances.

All of these can potentially cause significant injury, illness or worse if they are ingested, alighted or come into human contact. Therefore, it is important for you to store them as safely as possible.

One of the best ways to do that is to procure chemical cabinets from STOREMASTA. As they have been specifically made to the stringent requirements demanded by Australian Standards, they will offer excellent protection against vapour emissions, chemical spills, and inquisitive children!

Choose Childproof Furniture

When you have little ones there is often a lot of mess around, which can potentially be a bit of a hazard. For this reason, it is a good idea to fit out your home with child-proof, built-in storage options.

This could take many forms. For instance, coffee tables with rounded edges and soft-close drawers can help reduce the risk of injuries while providing extra space for toys, books, or blankets that might otherwise be left out.

Generally speaking, it is worth opting for heavy furniture as that is less likely to tip over. You should also secure items like bookshelves and dressers to the wall to prevent them from causing accidents.

Toy Storage

If you have ever trodden on a piece of Lego, then you’ll know how important toy storage is.

Not only does having it reduce the risk of getting hurt or injured, but it also goes a long way to removing clutter from your living spaces.

It is a good idea to use low, open shelves or bins to store toys so that children can easily access their belongings without feeling like they need to climb or pull on unstable furniture.

Equally, soft storage bins or fabric baskets are also great options because they tend to be lightweight, easy to move, and safe for little hands to manoeuvre.

Use Safety Locks and Latches

One of the easiest ways to make your storage solutions safer for children is to add locks and latches to drawers, storage units, cupboards or cabinets.

Doing this can prevent children from accessing potentially dangerous items such as cleaning supplies, medications, sharp objects, or anything else you want to keep out of reach.

There are many options available, but one of the best ones is magnetic locks that remain invisible from the outside and can only be opened with a special key.

High storage

If you don’t want to use safety locks or latches, it is a good idea to store your potentially hazardous household items at a high level that is well and truly out of reach of your little ones.

High kitchen cabinets, for instance, are good places to put your cleaning products, medications, sharp kitchen tools, and other hazardous items when they are not in use. Just make sure your little one can’t access them by climbing onto benchtops or using a chair.

Clear Containers

If your little one is into arts and crafts, there is a good chance they will have lots of supplies like mini acrylic paints, scissors, glues, and other decorative embellishments that need to be stored.

Not only can these pose a choking hazard for younger children, but they can also make a living space look untidy.

It is a good idea, therefore, to store these items in clear, labelled containers with tight-fitting lids and keep them on higher shelves where kids can’t reach them without supervision.

These clear containers enable you to quickly see what’s inside and access them as and when your child wants to get creative.

Safely Secure Cords and Wires

Loose cords and wires from electronics, appliances or blinds can be particularly dangerous to young children as they pose a serious strangulation risk. Additionally, they can also cause trips and falls.

To prevent this, you should use cord organisers or cable covers that secure them to the wall or, better still, hide them behind furniture. This makes it much harder for little children to access them.

If you have blinds, you can also invest in cordless window blinds to eliminate the risk of your child getting tangled in cords.

Rotate Toys

Instead of keeping all your child’s toys in one place, you should consider putting some in storage containers and bringing them out on a rotational basis.

Not only will they reduce the amount of clutter and potential hazards in your home, but they will also keep your little one engaged with ‘new’ toys they haven’t seen in a while.

Some of the best places to store these toys are in closets, a garage, a shed or under your bed.

If your child doesn’t miss the toys when you store them away, you can always sell them at a market stall.
