Go on a Cockatoo Island Adventure
hosted by the National Maritime Museum

The Australian National Maritime Museum is inviting families to go on a Cockatoo Island Adventure when it hosts its annual Family Fun Day on Cockatoo Island 10am – 4pm, Sunday 22 October. Held in partnership with the Harbour Trust, families will enjoy a free day of fun with DJ and dance zones, character tours, steam crane demonstrations, storytelling and much more.

A full day of fun is planned for all the family with activities for kids aged two and up including:

11am – 3pm – Kids on Deck- Rats, Bats and Bunting Tossers

Play, create and discover in Kids on Deck with creative art making, games and dress ups. Spy through the periscopes, raise the signal flags and learn secret semaphore codes as we salute to all things navy and nautical inspired by the historic cockatoo island shipyards.

Make your own model submarine or battleship, craft a souvenir badge, some bat bunting, or design a temporary tattoo. Play dress-up in sailor style!

11am – 3.30pm – Face Painting- sea creatures, sailors and swashbucklers
Have your pirate face, sailor tattoos or sea creatures painted on.

10.30am – 2pmBubbles and Beats
Enjoy spectacular interactive bubble art performances and dance the day away with sweet DJ beats

11.30am, 12.30pm and 2pm Ship Shape– hula hooping performance and workshop
30 minute sessions
Kick, jump, jitterbug and twirl with the crew from Swingout Sydney in interactive swing dancing performances and workshops.

12.15pm, 2.45pm – Saltwater Stories
Join D’harawal knowledge keeper Shannon Foster for stories, weaving and an animal encounter.

1.30pm, 2.30pm – Jannawi Dance Clan Performances
Enjoy the stunning fusion of modern and traditional dance styles with Jannawi Dance Clan as they pay tribute to Cockatoo Island’s rich Aboriginal history.

1pm and 3pm – Crooked Characters and Colonial Escapades Tour
Crooked Characters of Cockatoo Island and other Colonial Escapades is an hour-long family friendly journey into the hilarious and fascinating underbelly of Australia’s colonial and recent history and mythologies. Capacity is strictly limited so be sure to register at the visitors centre on arrival.

10.30 – 11.30am and 2pm- 3pm – Photo Ops with Blinky the lighthouse
Have your photo taken with our adorable inflatable lighthouse.

10.30am, 11.30am, 12.30pm, 1.30pm & 2.30pm – Steam Crane Demonstrations
Installed on Cockatoo Island in the early 1900’s and of exceptional heritage significance, this Travelling Steam Crane is a rare example of early steam powered cranes and amongst the oldest in Australia. Check out the demonstrations and see how steam power ruled.

All day- self guided
Pick up a trail from the visitors centre and explore the Island’s fascinating histories.

The Cockatoo Island Adventures family fun day is free and is a collaboration between the Australian National Maritime Museum and the Harbour Trust.
