Suburb Spotlight: North Ryde

Ideally located within easy reach of Sydney CBD, major shopping centres, Macquarie Business Park and the M2, it’s not hard to see why the leafy suburb of North Ryde is a popular choice for families. The suburbs of Chatswood West, East Ryde and Macquarie Park were formerly part of the larger North Ryde area, but now, all on its own, North Ryde has a population of 11,550 people (2016 Census). Macquarie Park and East Ryde still share the postcode 2113.

Transport

North Ryde is very well serviced by both trains (Chatswood/ Epping line) and buses (M2 and other roads). The Sydney Metro Northwest, opening late 2019, will connect directly with the existing railway between Epping and Chatswood to allow the new trains to operate a distance of 36 kilometres between Rouse Hill and Chatswood.

History

North Ryde was established in the mid 19th century as a farming district, in what was a heavily vegetated area, next to the already established district of Ryde. The earliest reference to the area being known as North Ryde was after the district’s first public school changed its name from City View Public School to North Ryde Public School in 1879. Most roads in North Ryde remained unsealed until the 1950s. From the 20th century onwards, North Ryde became a popular weekend destination, particularly with picnickers and boaters. The site of the original Field of Mars common became the Fairyland Pleasure Grounds, which featured a resort, dancehall and various rides.
