posted in: Life, Parks & Playgrounds | 0

A firm favourite in Five Dock, Livvi’s Place at Timbrell Park is a fantastic example of an inclusive and accessible playground, designed to cater to children of all abilities. After opening in 2009 and then being updated in 2016, it is just as popular as ever and for every child, regardless of their physical or cognitive abilities.

Inspired by the Livvi’s Place in Ryde, developed in memory of Olivia (Livvi) Rose, a young girl with a rare genetic condition, the initiative wass a joint effort between the Touched by Olivia Foundation and local councils, aiming to break down barriers to play and foster a sense of community. The playground is designed to be a space where children of all abilities can come together, play, and learn from each other.

Inclusive Design Features

  • Accessible Play Equipment: The playground features a variety of play equipment designed to accommodate children with different physical abilities. This includes wheelchair-accessible swings, ramps, and sensory play areas.
  • Soft Fall Ground Surface: The ground surface is covered with a soft fall material, making it safer for all children, including those with mobility aids or those who may be unsteady on their feet.
  • Quiet Zones: Recognizing the sensory needs of some children, Livvi’s Place includes quiet zones where kids can take a break and enjoy a calmer environment.
  • Inclusive Landscaping: The landscaping is carefully designed to create a welcoming atmosphere and ensure that all areas of the playground are easily accessible.

The park also has toilets, shade sails, bbq and lots of seating. What a great design!

Community Engagement and Impact

Livvi’s Place at Timbrell Park has quickly become a hub for community engagement. Families from diverse backgrounds come together, fostering connections and friendships among children and parents alike. The playground hosts regular events and activities, creating a sense of belonging for everyone.

Local schools often use Livvi’s Place as an educational resource, teaching children about inclusivity and diversity through hands-on experiences. This collaborative effort between the community and the Touched by Olivia Foundation has created a positive ripple effect, influencing other regions to adopt similar inclusive playground concepts.

Cafe

The playground also boasts a charming café that has become an integral part of the community. With a diverse menu catering to various tastes, the café offers a great choice of drinks, snacks, and light meals. Whether it’s grabbing a coffee while watching the kids play or indulging in a tasty treat, the café at Livvi’s Place enhances the overall experience. The café has become a hub for socializing, creating an inviting environment that extends the sense of community fostered by the inclusive playground itself.

They’re open 7 days from 6.30am and close around 1.30pm.
