If you’re looking for an activity that builds confidence, fitness and friendships without the pressure or hefty costume costs, Gladesville Ryde Physie is a beautiful local option that has been part of our community for generations.
Founded more than 80 years ago, the club is the oldest BJP Physical Culture Club in Australia and offers classes for girls and women of all ages, from preschoolers through to seniors.
And exciting news for local families – Gladesville Ryde Physie has recently been awarded a City of Ryde Community Grant to support its initiative Dance, Grow, Empower, helping grow junior membership and strengthen community connections!

What is Physie?
Physie (Physical Culture) blends a variety of dance styles, including:
- Jazz
- Ballet
- Contemporary
The routines are choreographed to modern, age-appropriate music, and the focus is on achieving personal goals rather than winning.
It’s an affordable sport, there are no expensive costumes, and it provides a safe, supportive space for girls of all dance abilities.

Confidence On and Off the Stage
From July onwards, girls have the opportunity to compete in both individual and team events. While there’s absolutely no pressure to compete, competitions are a wonderful way to:
- Perform in front of an audience
- Build resilience
- Develop teamwork
- Grow confidence
As junior member Olive shared, “I love physie because it’s a fun space with girls my own age. We learn all different styles of dance and then get to perform in competitions from the middle of the year.”
And Norah adds, “Physie is my favourite and I love performing. Oh, and our teacher Miss Bailee is awesome – she makes every class fun!”

Classes for Every Age
One of the things families love most is that Physie truly is for all ages and even for life – you’ll see little preschoolers, primary school girls, teens and ladies all part of the same supportive club community.
- Preschool (3–4 years): Mondays – Boronia Park Uniting Church
- Junior Girls (5–12 years): Mondays – Boronia Park Uniting Church & Saturdays – Truscott Street Public School
- Senior Girls (13–28+ years): Thursdays – JDance, Marsfield
- Ladies (18–70+ years): Monday evenings – Boronia Park Uniting Church
- Senior Ladies (60+ years): Mondays – Boronia Park Uniting Church
The junior physie season runs from February to October, while senior girls and ladies continue through to November.
