Weekend Away: Berry NSW

posted in: Life, Mini Breaks | 0

Whether you’re after a girls weekend, a romantic getaway or a family vacay, Berry has something for everyone! Located only 2 hours from Sydney and from there just a few minutes drive to the beautiful beaches of the NSW South Coast, it’s a must-visit in our books!

This charming, historic town has lots to offer from boutique accommodation, excellent dining, shopping, wineries and more. It’s great to visit all year round, each season bringing out the different features of this picturesque destination.

Things to do

Check out the Kiama Blowhole

Formed from basalt lava that flowed over 260 million years ago (a million years before the dinosaurs!), the famous Kiama Blowhole has a 2.5m wide opening and at its peak, water has reached heights of more than 30m! Another fun fact – Kiama means “where the sea makes a noise”.

There is also a smaller blowhole nearby – both are mesmerising to watch.

Visit a local winery

Berry has at least 5 wineries within 15 minutes of town that offer cellar door experiences.

Coolangatta Estate is a favourite and also has some historic farmhouse style accommodation.

Crooked River Wines in Gerringong won the Australian Good Food Guide’s best restaurant on the South Coast in 2019 and is set on the prettiest of grounds!

Wine, dine and stay, all in one place at Silos Estate and Wileys Creek. This working vineyard is just a stone’s throw from Berry village and some of the winery’s buildings even date all the way back to 1870.

Fall in love with Cupitt’s Estate, a family-owned and operated winery, brewery, fromagerie (cheese-making) and restaurant venue located in the rolling hills of Ulladulla.

Mountains Ridge Wines is not only a cellar door but a cafe, restaurant and market garden too, all set on the picturesque grounds of the Coolangatta headlands.

Browse the local shops

One of the best things to do in Berry is to peruse the gorgeous stores on the main and side streets. From beautiful homewares to artisan produce, Berry has a store for every taste. The village is brimming with boutiques and homeware stores that ooze country charm.

Check out the new playground – Boongaree Nature Play Park

The kids will LOVE this brand new and oh-so-epic playground, completed in December 2021. It features everything from flying fox, sensory play area, swings, slides, climbing nets, exercise equipment and more. It cost more than $6.5m and it really shows!

Visit Seven Mile Beach

Though Berry feels like an inland country town, it’s actually only a 10-minute drive to the sandy expanse of Seven Mile Beach. True to its name, Seven Mile Beach makes up just over 12 kilometres of coastline, stretching from Gerroa in the north to Shoalhaven Heads in the south.

Take a hike to Drawing Room Rocks

For those keen on a bit of an adventure Drawing Room Rocks bushwalk and lookout is absolutely stunning and just what the doctor ordered.

The 4.5km return hike is steep and at certain pointscwalkers may need to climb over fallen rocks or trees in order to reach the lookout. However, this is all part of the fun and we can assure you the reward is worth the challenge!

Eats

Milkwood Bakery

If you like sourdough and pastries (who doesn’t?) you’re going to want to make a stop at Milkwood Bakery and try something from their array of tasty treats.

Icecream

The kids will love you forever after a scoop or two from Il Locale Gelato, which serves up delicious locally-produced gelato, as does The Dairy Bar in The Treat Factory, PLUS they also do to-die-for sundaes and milkshakes.

Queen Street Cafe

Queen Street Cafe is a favourite in town, serving breakfast and lunch Wednesday – Sunday. They do fresh juices, mouthwatering breakfast boards, fabulous salads, steak and chips and everything in between!

Berry Donut Van

Open daily from 9am – 6pm the Berry Donut Van has been baking house-made, piping hot cinnamon doughnuts for over 55 years. Don’t mind the queue, these guys are absolutely worth the wait!
