Did you know you can turn your breast milk into powder through a special freeze-drying process? Enter Nourishy, the amazing “breast milk angels” who can transform your milk into powder—essentially, your own personalised formula! Here’s why I decided to freeze-dry my breast milk and how I discovered Nourishy.
Breastfeeding—wow what a ride. While some say it’s easy, the reality can be very different. It’s a skill both mum and baby must learn together. I wasn’t able to breastfeed my first child and ended up exclusively pumping for a few months until recurring bouts of mastitis (if you know, you know) forced me to stop.
When I was pregnant with my second child, I was determined to breastfeed successfully. I even consulted a lactation expert during pregnancy to prepare myself. However, my precious Bubba had other plans and arrived five weeks early. Being a premmie, he needed extra help to gain weight, so I pumped milk to provide top-up bottles alongside breastfeeding, following medical advice.
By the time he was 9 weeks old, I started winding down the pumping and stopped completely by 12 weeks, determined to avoid mastitis again as my supply was already very good. At that point, I had a freezer overflowing with breast milk. Since I wanted to continue exclusively breastfeeding, I began to wonder: what could I do with all that frozen milk? That’s when I discovered Nourishy.
I kept the milk in my freezer, accumulating over 5 litres during this period of excess supply! Fortunately, I was able to donate most of it to a lovely mum who couldn’t breastfeed because she needed to begin breast cancer treatment immediately.
A few months ago, our freezer died for eight days, and my frozen breast milk became my number one priority. I rushed it to my neighbour’s freezer—after all, that liquid gold is irreplaceable. It was during this stressful time that I discovered Nourishy, the “breast milk angels.”
Nourishy uses a special freeze-drying process to transform your breast milk into your own custom formula—without altering its composition. How genius is that?
How does Nourishy work?
After placing your order, your kit is delivered to your home. It includes a detailed info flyer explaining everything you need to know—what to do, how to do it, and when. Here’s what happens next:
Step 1: Nourishy Receives Your Milk. You can either ship your frozen breast milk or drop it off at one of their facilities. If shipping, you’ll need to book a FedEx pickup for either Monday or Tuesday (all covered in your initial kit cost). Every bag of milk is individually weighed, logged, and tracked. I was initially concerned about how the milk would stay frozen on its journey from Sydney to Queensland. But rest assured, it does! The kit includes a medical-grade box that keeps the milk safe and frozen—how clever is that?
When your milk arrives at Nourishy, they verify it’s still frozen and then transfer it immediately into their freezer.
Step 2 – Freeze-Drying Your Milk, Nourishy label & freeze-dry your breast milk using their contact-free process, ensuring your milk never touches their equipment.
Step 3 – Safe, Long-Term Packaging. After QC testing, they package your freeze-dried breast milk into ready-to-use pouches that last for 3 years on the shelf.
Step 4 – Consume & Enjoy Your Milk. Add water to make a bottle, or add your freeze-dried breast milk powder directly into your baby’s solid foods!

I’m still breastfeeding my 17-month-old and have been slowly freezing the milk I pump when my little guy is at daycare. I plan to use this milk on days when I can’t pump enough for daycare or when his dad needs to give him something while I’m away. I’ll also use it once we finish breastfeeding, especially if he becomes unwell—after all, we all know the incredible properties of breast milk. It’s no wonder they call it liquid gold.
I truly love that I’ve been able to extend its shelf life to 3 years, and it still retains so many of the nutrients. Plus, it’s easily mixed with water and ready to go!
You can follow Nourishy here on Instagram to watch the process and behind the scenes – the whole process is amazing to me and one I am grateful to have come across. Whilst I am a paying customer of Nourishy and bought my own medium kit, this is a sponsored article.
