Suburb Spotlight: Ryde

Ryde is a suburb of around 26,499 people, located 13 kilometres north-west of the Sydney CBD – or about a 25-minute drive or 35-minute bus trip.

“One of the most common remarks that we hear about Ryde is how central it is to everything with easy access to freeways, parks, schools and shopping centres. It is considered as a central point between all major suburbs in the Northern Districts, whilst being within easy transport to Sydney CBD. Rich in history, Ryde has a variety of style of homes to suit everyone, however, over the coming years we will see quite a number of knock down rebuilds or renovations and extensions occurring in the area. Ryde already features great infrastructure, however, the growth of Ryde in coming years will add to the already established lifestyle hubs such as Top Ryde Shopping Centre and facilities such as Ryde Leisure Aquatic Centre. As you can see, it is easy to understand why everyone wants their own piece of Ryde” Michael Dowling, McGrath Ryde

History

Ryde is the third-oldest settlement in NSW behind Sydney and Parramatta. At first, Ryde was known by its Aboriginal name Wallumatta, then the area between Parramatta and Lane Cove Rivers became known as the Field of Mars. From the 1840s it became known as Ryde and eventually, in 1870, the name was formally adopted. The suburb contains the oldest settler’s cottage in Australia, Addington, on Victoria Road.
