WOW – what a few months it has been for us all! If like me, you have been working at home and helping with home learning, you might have been worried not only about your home-school teaching abilities but also how much time you had available to assist your child/ren. I know that I couldn’t give as much time as I would have liked to my 9yo daughter on home learning especially as a good chunk of my time was spent navigating year 4 maths, understanding all the new terminology and learning strategies – it was all a bit tricky!

However, in the back of my mind, I was constantly grateful that she was already enrolled in NumberWorks’nWords Epping for both Maths and English. Even during lockdown, she was able to continue her one-hour maths and one-hour English lessons via zoom so even if my home learning assistance fell short, she had NumberWorks’nWords online tutors who are specialised in this area. It was a LIFESAVER!

We first started at NumberWorks’nWords Epping back in June 2020. Originally they booked some advertising with us at Ryde District Mums and so I took my daughter (who was 8 at the time) along to a few classes to gauge what it was like to write about it for you all. (You can read about that here.)

I really liked what I saw, how my daughter enjoyed it. She’s not into doing homework from school so I thought she would also push back on this, however, she LOVED NumberWorks’nWords. She was excited to go and would ask to go more than once a week. I know – hard to believe. So I decided to enrol her as a paying student and she has been there since, aka almost 18 months. She does both Maths and English each week during school term and a number of times we have booked into their school holiday programs as well!

Overall, I think it’s one of the best investments we’ve made for our daughter as it enables her to extend her learning and refresh herself on what has been learnt at school. Whilst there are many things I love about NumberWorks’nWords, I’ve narrowed it down to my top few.

Completed At Her Pace

At the start of each term, Adam and Ash (owners and local parents) work with you, the parent, to write goals for your child for the term. This could be based on conversations you might have had with your child’s class teacher or anything you noticed during home learning. I love that NumberWorks’nWords works at her pace so it’s not stressful or overwhelming. She builds on her school learning and learns new things all the time. She doesn’t need to work at the same pace as others in her class or time slot, each child has their own personalised plan.

Ability to Customise Topics & Timing

Customising the timing and topics to tie in with what she currently is learning at school builds on her confidence and understanding and help to reduce overwhelm at school. She is in year 4 and this is when Maths seems to get tricky (in my opinion). I  remember wondering if and when I would use my school maths skills in the future. Turns out the answer was YES – WHEN HELPING MY OWN CHILD LEARN MATHS!!

Builds Confidence in exam and Assessment Situations

I used to find that after doing a test or assessment at school, my daughter would come home and tell me she got stressed and worried as one question was so hard that it threw her off the rest of the questions. Or worse, the mere fact that there was an assessment caused her stress that threw her off!.

At NumberWorks’nWords they do a mini quiz each week for Maths called Fast Facts. This is where they complete 25 addition or subtraction questions and the aim is to complete it as quickly as possible whilst maintaining a high accuracy. They are timed each week, with the aim of reducing their time while increasing accuracy – thus practising a ‘test environment’.

Whilst working through topics, they revise it once, then complete a topic test. They need to achieve 90% at both to move on to the next topic. All these mini-quizzes and tests get children used to that kind of environment but in a low-pressure situation – meaning when she goes to school and they get an assessment, she is used to the scenario and copes much better.

Support and Acknowledgement

Every time a child completes a revision or topic test and passes, all the tutors stop and cheer the relevant child on. The tutors only let them complete these when they know they are ready so they set them up for success. That child’s efforts are then acknowledged by the centre and celebrated – kids then get a certificate to take home with lots of sparkly stickers.

Fun Elements

Whilst lots of learning happens during their session, a few minutes of fun ‘games’ are also included in each session because what child doesn’t love games?? The games have educational elements that enhace problem-solving and will revolve around either Maths or English topics, relevant to whatever they’re currently working – the kids LOVE IT! If they get top scores their names are added to the Scoreboard so kids strive to do their best to see their name up there.
