Tucked inside leafy Hunts Creek Reserve, these small but stunning waterfalls are a family favourite thanks to their easy access, shady bush setting, and that magical feeling of stumbling across a natural wonder in the middle of suburbia.

With short kid-friendly walks, plenty of space to explore, and a peaceful atmosphere, Balaka Falls proves you don’t have to travel far for a nature adventure.

The Falls

Balaka Falls may not be the biggest waterfall in Sydney, but what they lack in size they make up for in charm. The falls cascade over sandstone rock ledges into a tranquil pool, surrounded by bushland that makes you forget you’re only minutes from Carlingford shops. After rain, the water really gushes, making it an especially rewarding visit.

Even though many locals have visited countless times, nature still has surprises in store – like the day three black cockatoos appeared at the falls to enjoy the waterfall with us!

Walks & Distances

One of the best things about Balaka Falls is that it’s so easy to get to, with several short paths leading in:

• 📍 Norfolk Place – approx. 250m

• 📍 4 Ferndale Drive – approx. 400m

• 📍 Edinburgh Avenue – approx. 450m

• 📍 Balaka Drive – also popular, with a short bush track leading directly down to the falls

The loop walk around Hunts Creek Reserve is about 1.7km if you’d like to extend your visit. Along the way, you’ll find bush tracks, creek crossings and plenty of bird calls.

Family-Friendly Features

• Short walk – Under 10 minutes from most entry points.

• Nature play – Perfect for rock hopping, spotting lizards, and exploring.

• Wildlife – From birds to insects, there’s plenty to discover (keep an ear out for black cockatoos!).

• Viewing spots – Take your time at the falls – there are a few paths and different angles worth exploring.

Handy tips for families:

• Best visited after rain when the waterfall is at its most spectacular.

• Gumboots are a lifesaver for kids after heavy rain – the tracks can stay muddy and slippery.

• The walk is not pram-friendly unless you have a very sturdy “all-terrain” pram – and even then, it’s easier to leave it at the top and walk down.

• Rocks can be slippery, so good shoes are recommended.

• Parking: Free street parking at all entry points.

• Facilities: No toilets, BBQs or playgrounds at the falls – come prepared.

• Best time to visit: After a good rainfall for maximum water flow, but it’s a lovely bush spot year-round.

🌿 Please help protect this special place by taking any rubbish home. There’s a lot of wildlife in the reserve, and unfortunately, litter is a recurring problem – one recent visit included collecting bottles and food packets left behind by others.
