The much-anticipated $1.4 million upgrade to Parramatta’s iconic Lake Parramatta swimming area was fully completed in 2024 and the site is gearing up to reopen for the 2025/26 summer season.
What’s New & Improved
The renovation, carried out between April and September 2024, delivered a range of safety, accessibility, and amenity upgrades.
Key new features include:
- A formal lifeguard viewing platform for better sightlines over the swimming zones
- A gently sloping sandy “beach entry” created via an underwater retaining wall to improve safe access to the water
- Improved pathways, handrails, traction treatments on steps, and formal stairs to the water’s edge
- New shaded areas, more seating via sandstone walls, and landscaping, including native plantings and six eucalyptus trees
- An outdoor shower, new signage, and a site-based emergency response beacon
- Bushland regeneration and garden bed plantings to blend the upgrades with the natural environment
These enhancements aim to strike a balance between visitor comfort and preserving the natural, bushland character of Lake Parramatta.
Swim Season & Lifeguard Hours (2025/26)
According to the City of Parramatta’s official pages:
- The swimming area is closed during winter.
- The 2025/26 swim season is set to begin on Saturday, 25 October 2025
- Lifeguards will be on duty from 11 am to 7 pm during supervised times.
A Vision for Parramatta’s Green Corridor
The revitalization of Lake Parramatta was part of the City of Parramatta’s broader vision to create a continuous green corridor stretching from the lake to Sydney Olympic Park. Lord Mayor Cr Martin Zaiter shared his excitement about the project, emphasizing the importance of the lake as a beloved local swimming spot and a tranquil escape for Western Sydney residents. These upgrades align with the council’s plan to bolster Parramatta’s reputation as a “River City,” where natural beauty meets community convenience.
Guided by community input, the council has modified the design to minimize environmental impact while implementing necessary safety and accessibility upgrades, ensuring that Lake Parramatta remains a safe, inclusive, and enjoyable location for everyone.
A Boost for Western Sydney
The transformation was funded by the NSW Government, with support from the Places to Swim program and Western Sydney Infrastructure Grants. NSW Deputy Premier Prue Car emphasized the importance of Lake Parramatta as a cooling retreat for Western Sydney residents. Parramatta State MP Donna Davis also expressed pride in seeing the upgrades completed, noting how these improvements cater to the area’s fast-growing population by creating a versatile space for relaxation and recreation.
Lake Parramatta: A Unique Historical Landmark
Located less than 5kms from the Parramatta CBD, Lake Parramatta spans 10.5 hectares and is part of the Lake Parramatta Reserve. Not only does it provide swimming and recreation options, but it is also a historical treasure—the first manmade lake built in Australia (1856) and among the oldest engineered dams in the world. Today, it’s heritage-listed, welcoming visitors with facilities including boat hire, non-motorized boating options, a children’s playground, walking trails, picnic areas, barbecues, a café, and off-street parking.
