Suburb Spotlight: Putney

Putney is a suburb of just over 4000 people, located just 10 kilometres from the City – or about a 25-minute drive or 35-minute bus trip. Considered part of the Ryde municipality, it is situated on the northern bank of the Parramatta River.

Real Estate

“No matter the style or size of home you’re looking for, you will find it in Putney. The Putney market is ever changing and highly sought after with a diverse mix of young families and relaxed retirees. Recently, many families are choosing to knock down and rebuild or renovate rather than move areas so they can stay close to the vibrant, tight knit community and have easy access to the water, cafes, shops, great schools and the CBD. It’s a prestige market with large land sizes, beautiful waterfront homes and still a great scope for development.” Michael Dowling, McGrath Ryde

Transport

Putney is serviced by Sydney Buses route 507 which travels between the city and Macquarie University via Meadowbank. There is also a ferry service from Kissing Point Wharf which travels up and down the Parramatta River from Parramatta to Circular Quay. Meadowbank railway station is the closest station to the suburb. There is also the Mortlake Ferry vehicle punt which crosses the river between Putney Point and Mortlake Point and is the last surviving punt in the Sydney metropolitan area.

History

The area of Putney and Ryde was originally known Eastern Farms and then as Kissing Point by the British colonists. It was one of the first areas of British settlement in the colony and has a long history of dairy farms. A notable resident was the brewer James Squire, who settled there in 1792. He established his brewery the Malt Shovel near the present day Kissing Point.
