How a Physiotherapist Can Prepare You for Pregnancy and Birth

posted in: Health & Fitness, Life | 0

Pregnancy and childbirth is such an extraordinary time in a woman’s life and there is nothing else in this world to compare it to. Pregnancy and childbirth require you to call upon your resourcefulness, flexibility and endurance, in both a mental and physical sense. Physiotherapy can help you ensure everything you do before, during and after pregnancy keeps your body functional and out of pain. Retaining your health, strength and mobility can be very difficult while carrying a baby (both in the womb and in your arms), given everything that is going on in your body.

At Active Lifestyle Physiotherapy, our Physiotherapist Marjan (‘MJ’) Akbarian specialises in Women’s Health Physiotherapy. She can train and prepare you for delivery and a good postpartum recovery. And don’t worry – you can even bring your bub to your appointments.

Here are four of our top things to think about as you go through the unique life task that is pregnancy and childbirth:

  1. The big day will involve some weird and uncomfortable positions and movements. We can help you develop strong and supple muscles to push more effectively and provide smooth passage for your baby.
  2. Your pelvis requires the help of good, strong surrounding muscles to keep it mobile, stable and pain-free during and after pregnancy. We can help you focus on your pelvic floor, abdominal muscles, diaphragm, spine, glutes, quads, adductors, hamstrings and hip flexors (just to name a few) to ensure your pelvis has all the help it can get.
  3. Your pelvic floor also needs strong foundations to stay healthy, such as balanced posture, stable feet, solid glutes and a strong pelvis. We can help you with daily habits that encourage proper body alignment and avoid over-straining the muscles.
  4. Babies are WAY heavier than they look and you are going to spend A LOT of time holding them. We can help relieve pelvic, back, neck and wrist pain, which are common in a post-partum body. Your body is in recovery mode and here you are having to lift the baby and other baby related things. That weight, force and pressure can lead to body dysfunction if you haven’t built up the necessary strength.

At Active Lifestyle Physiotherapy, we want to help you have the important conversations about your baby-body, minimise future issues and get you moving well so you can enjoy the experience of your baby to its fullest.
