Do you live in Sydney? Do you have a child aged between 9 and 12 years?

If yes, then your family is invited to take part in my doctoral research!

Hi, my name is Tasmin & I am a PhD candidate in the Department of Geography & Planning at Macquarie University. My research project concerns risk and children’s outdoor play.

I am looking to recruit Sydney-based families with children aged between 9 and 12 years to take part in my research on children’s outdoor play. The purpose of the study is to explore how constructions of risk are shaping children’s play experiences in bush, beach and other outdoor spaces during middle childhood in Sydney. Families taking part will be making a valuable contribution to bettering our understanding of where and how children are playing outdoors in Sydney and the opportunities that outdoor play in our cities offers for engaging with nature.

The study is being conducted by me, Tasmin Dilworth, to meet the requirements of a Doctor of Philosophy under the supervision of Associate Professor Andrew McGregor (andrew.mcgregor@mq.edu.au) and Dr Donna Houston (donna.houston@mq.edu.au) of the Department of Geography & Planning, Macquarie University.

If your family decides to take part, participation will involve two components:

  • Firstly, parents/guardians will be asked to take part in a 45-60 minute interview with me and complete a short demographic questionnaire
  • Secondly, a 9-12 year old member of the family will be asked to take part in a series of 30-45 minute interviews with me. Child participants will also be asked to draw a map of their neighbourhood, indicating where they like to play outdoors and will be given a waterproof single-use camera and asked to photograph the outdoor spaces they spend time playing in

Each participating family will be given $50 in compensation for their time and there are some other thank-you goodies for the kids.

If you think you might be interested in participating or would just like to find out more please contact me at tasmin.dilworth@students.mq.edu.au
