Are you part of or have you been part of a political party? If so, which one?
Yes, I am a member of Socialist Alliance
Tell us a bit about you and your team. What’s your day job?
I live in North Parramatta and am active in the North Parramatta Residents Action Group (NPRAG). I am a keen gardener and am chair of the (soon to be built) Sherwin Park Community Garden. I would categorise my ‘day job’ as an activist-journalist and editor. I have worked in the University sector and am a member of the National Tertiary Education Union. I am running on a community ticket with local independent activist Katrina James, who founded The Westies, is an events organiser and photographer. Katrina and I organised two successful climate action protests in Parramatta during the Black Summer bushfires, where the idea to run as a team for council was born. Our third team member is Douglas Hawthorne, a local activist who is a passionate supporter of anti-racism campaigns and migrant workers’ rights.
What are some things you love about living in the area?
Parramatta is a culturally diverse and culturally rich city, where I have had the opportunity to meet and work with some amazing people on a number of positive community projects. I love Parramatta’s natural environment, parks, bushland and heritage precincts, which need to be protected.
What do you believe to be the 3 main issues affecting our community?
- Overdevelopment
- Housing stress
- Alienation from decision-making
What are the 3 key things you plan to achieve?
- Build organising power in the community
- Work alongside residents
- Accountability through regular ward meetings
What about your long term vision for the area?
The Parramatta becomes a city where the needs of the community and a safe climate are at the centre of decision-making.
