Free Dementia Awareness Month 2017 community workshop, hosted by Scalabrini Village in collaboration with Alzheimer's Australia NSW

HOSTED BY SCALABRINI VILLAGE IN COLLABORATION WITH ALZHEIMER’S AUSTRALIA AS STATISTICS REVEAL DEMENTIA IS ON THE RISE IN THE LIVERPOOL AREA

According to research conducted by Alzheimer’s Australia and Deloitte Access Economics, the prevalence of dementia within the Liverpool area is on the rise. Research estimates suggest that more than 860 locals are currently living with dementia and by 2050 the prevalence of dementia within Liverpool will more than quadruple to 3,802 people.

The community is encouraged to attend a free community forum about dementia, conducted by Alzheimer’s Australia NSW in association with Scalabrini Village on Wednesday 20th September, from 10:00am to 12:00pm as part of Dementia Awareness Month.
This year’s theme is ‘You are not alone’ and the free forum, will provide attendees with an opportunity to better understand normal ageing memory loss and dementia. The focus of the forum is to raise awareness of conditions that affect the brain including dementia, discuss ways to maximise wellbeing and promote a healthy brain. It will also assist families and carers and is open to all members of the community.
The event will include an information workshop led by Alzheimer’s Australia and the Scalabrini Village Dementia Excellence Team of experts.

In 2017, there is an estimated 196,490 people in the Australian community caring for people with dementia, with projections suggesting that by 2025 more than 255,800 carers will be needed in the community to care for people with dementia. Dementia is the second leading cause of death of older people in Australia and dementia symptoms are typically noticed by families three years before a firm diagnosis is made.

Dementia Awareness Month runs throughout the month of September every year. The purpose of the annual campaign by Alzheimer’s Australia is to encourage Australians to become dementia-aware, have a better understanding of what it is like for a person to live with dementia, and ultimately be encouraged to create communities where people living with dementia are supported to live a high quality of life with meaning, purpose and value.

Complimentary morning tea will be provided to attendees and while this is a free community event, bookings are essential. To make a booking please contact Angela Vojnovic on 02 9822-4899.

With an emphasis on specialised dementia care, Scalabrini Village is a not-for-profit residential aged care provider with Villages across NSW.
